The study revealed that Melafix had no significant bactericidal or inhibitory effect on any of the pathogens tested. This observation suggests that anecdotal benefits of Melafix are not owing to antibacterial activity.

You can use them both at the same time. Definately get them out of the main tank though. And watch carefully, it may be columnaris, in which case mela/pimafix will not help. I didn’t really think about it, but would adding the aquarium salt hurt my snails?

Repeat dose daily for seven days. Treatment may be continued if necessary. When treating an advanced or chronic infection: add two teaspoons of MelaFix for every 50 gallons or 1/4 cup for every 300 gallons of pond water.
Does aquarium salt raise pH?
Aquarium salt Although plain aquarium/tonic salt (sodium chloride) is sometimes suggested as a good way to increase hardness and improve buffering, it in fact provides very little of either. Marine salt mix, on the other hand, will raise the pH and carbonate hardness quite significantly.
Is Melafix an antibiotic?
Melafix (a proprietary name) is an all-natural aquarium antibiotic consisting of an essential oil from a tree in the Melaleuca genus.
Will Melafix hurt healthy fish?
Melafix works great on repairing fins, but will not kill a bacteria that might be causing fin rot. As such, it will not cure your fish (just help it along after the infection is over) but it also wont kill your beneficial bacteria.
Can I use aquarium salt with medication?
If you perform a water change, however, you can dose the new tank water with aquarium salt at the same concentration. The second option is to only use aquarium salt to treat infections – the most effective way to do so is to give your fish a salt bath.
Can too much aquarium salt kill fish?
A high salt concentration can make them lose their equilibrium and they will simply roll over. If you don’t act fast at this point your fish may well die. But opinions vary, and some research shows that even supposedly salt intolerant fish can adjust to very small levels of salt in their water.
Can too much Melafix kill fish?
Melafix is useless and a waste of money, but it isn’t likely to kill. It doesn’t even kill the diseases it is supposed to. … If the symptoms were the result of a communicable disease, it may have ripped through the tank as soon as the unquarantined fish went in. It could be viral or bacterial – guppies are prone to both.
What happens if you put too much aquarium salt in your tank?
I wasn’t able to find a lot of information on the effects of oversalting the water in a freshwater tank but can add that too much salt may lead to an overactive slime coat and in severe cases can lead to dehydration. Remember, through osmosis, a feshwater fish will loose water when placed in a tank with too much salt.
What does Melafix cure?

It really slows down the process. I suggest waiting 10-12 hours after treating with medication to do a water change each day. This allows the medication enough time to take effect. With my experience, I did a large water change, added the melafix, and waited the recommended 7 days to do another water change.

Note: aquarium salt does not evaporate or get filtered out. As water evaporates, the salt is left behind. Therefore, only add salt (in the proportionate amount) when doing water changes. For instance, if you’re treating 100 gallons of water at level 2 for ich, you need 50 Tbsp of salt initially.
Does Melafix kill bacteria?
Melafix is a salve. In my experience (I breed betta splendens), it is not very effective in treating bacterial infections. It can help soothe, but you’re not going to heal a fish with that stuff. Your best bet is really to remove the gourami to a separate tank and do very regular water changes.
Does Melafix help fin rot?
API MELAFIX heals bacterial infections such as fin & tail rot, eye cloud, popeye, body slime, and mouth fungus. As a general note, all API medications can be used in conjunction with each other safely, as long as you are able to follow the directions for both during treatment.
